2009 Elizabeth Ann Seton Gifted Educators
St. Mary School in Westphalia celebrated the end of the school year with an all-school Mass on June 1, 2009. The Right-to-Life Club student group, led by Mrs. Mary Nurenberg, was honored for their volunteer work as a part of this year-end celebration. Therefore, Mrs. Nurenberg was only a little surprised when she saw her entire family assembled in St. Mary Parish that drizzly Monday morning. Little did she know that, not only was her student group being honored, she too was being honored for her outstanding commitment to Catholic education. Mrs. Nurenberg was nominated for the 2009 Elizabeth Ann Seton Gifted Educator Award by Principal Raymond Rzepecki with supporting letters from a fellow faculty member and seven current and former students. Mike Noeker, GLCEF Board Chair, and Danielle Casavant, GLCEF President, presented Mrs. Nurenberg with a commemorative plaque and a check for $1,000 for use at St. Mary School. By the time Mrs. Nurenberg finished thanking her family, colleagues, students and friends, there was barely a dry eye in the parish. She was truly moved by receiving this award and the outpouring of love and respect from her students and peers that it represents.
Mrs. Nurenberg won the school-based educator award. A parish-based educator has also been selected for an award, but the time and location of the presentation has not yet been determined.

Tuition Assistance Grant Awards Announced
The Tuition Assistance Grant process for the 2009-2010 school year is now complete, excluding any unexpected changes in enrollment status for recipients of grants. This year we received 168 applications, representing 321 students. The total need of this group was assessed by Private School Aid Service as $436,467. This is a record number of applicants; not surprising with these trying economic times. As a comparison, last year we received 115 applications representing 226 students, with total need assessed at $300,701.
